While I grew up reluctantly learning how to sail on a tiny sunfish my dad fondly called his Yach-it, that he kept in a patch of grass near our driveway in Iowa, one of my fondest memories in my early twenties was tagging along with my parents during their beloved summer sailing trips to the Virgin Islands. We went on these adventures sans Captain both times I went, and spent most of the time lost in a book working on my tan while my dad, brother and then-husband sailed. Jeremy, however, grew up sailing! His parents lived on a 53-foot boat full time for seven years, sailing around Malaysia and Thailand. It was the place he fell even more in love with the ocean and water.
When it came to the time in our Life Design process to create three versions of experiences we wanted to have in our “Ideal Life” there was a surprise! We both were curious about sailing and what it might be like to spend time together and with family on a boat. I had even included in mine, “live somewhere I can wear a bathing suit every day!” As a result of Jeremy and I sitting at the kitchen island sharing our dreams, we crafted the plan to spend July 2021 aboard a 46-foot catamaran affectionately named Spanky’s Gang. Add in the obsession we have as a family with the reality TV series Below Deck, (The Pandemic gave us time to watch the entire series front to back!) off we went to be both crew and guests of this amazing vessel. The sunsets were incredible and we saw water a color of blue we had never seen before. We cooked and swam and danced and read and tanned. The three girls learned to sail and we met incredible new friends along the way. Sailing will definitely be in our future!
